Lawrence of Belgravia
(Blu-ray)
Directed by Paul Kelly
”The ‘80s were like a school playground full of mean kids who wouldn’t let Felt join in and play – and the headmaster John Peel was thrashing my backside constantly while keeping me in detention”.
By the beginning of the next century we find
Lawrence still struggling and about to be evicted from his Belgravia
rooms. We follow the turmoil while his latest incarnation Go-Kart
Mozart attempt to ‘rehearse live’ for an upcoming tour that never
materialises. From back street pubs to Paris and on to the Hammersmith
Odeon, opening to an empty auditorium, we witness a rugged
determination that just will not give up, no matter how adverse the
terrain gets.
We share in the making of a new album and various attempts at promotion
while homeless and condemned to hostel living, and see finally at the
far end of a very rocky road a glimmer of a new beginning, where hope
and redemption become bedfellows with Lawrence’s famed “abject passive
misery.”
Here is Paul Kelly’s stirring character study of life lived within the margins of an unforgiving music business.
