I used to watch The Best of Saturday Night, which was hilarious, and the very best of the sketches done by this same crew. I wanted to share the experience with my bf, who hadn't seen any of those skits with Chevy Chase or Belushi or Ackroyd, but this collection is just so disappointing. There are some gems, but they are much too far and few between. There's a lot of repeat skits, horrible musical guests, some sadly lame sketches with Jim Hensen's Muppets, jokes that go on too long, bad delivery by special guest stars, and characters that didn't come into their own until much later. The first 2 shows left him so bored, I couldn't get him to watch any of the others, even when I pre-viewed them to find the best ones. This set is for die-hard fans and theatre students only.

And the shoot-outs. :D The movie plays with action and spy film clichés, to satisfying effect. It's so gratifying to see an older female character play a truly fierce assassin, and wear proper footwear. And I can't even describe how exciting it was when the paranoid conspiracy theorist proved to be right and got to use his air-to-ground missile. Red is consistently action-packed, well-acted, and funny throughout.

This one is far superior to number 2 in the Vacation series, and it's a "must see" for Christmas. It truly captures the humor of a house full of relatives during the holidays, with both familiar irritating situations, and highly creative new scenarios. Fans and newcomers alike will enjoy the vision of Eddie (Randy Quaid) in his morning gear out on the street, and Clark's (Chevy Chase) usual meltdown which reaches new heights of hilarity. Kids will love it too, and it gets funnier with each viewing, so you won't mind if they play it over and over during their break. :)

Most of the horror and plot are conceptual, and there's only a tiny bit of blood in comparison to the majority of today's movies. It's extremely well done, building slowly, with excellent character development, and doesn't need the blood and gore to shock us.

It's set entirely inside a radio studio, and you hear about the horror as bits and pieces of news come in, from people around town who are scared to death and experiencing terrible things up close and personal. The actors are excellent, and their fear is believable, even though you can only hear their voices. It's not cheesy low budget - it's done right & it works to keep you tense and confused.

The main character is a crochety, paranoid, ex-hippie, who likes to get people fired-up with his controversial radio programme. He knows what it's like to have his mind altered and he's been messed with before, but he's a thinker, who likes new ideas and who likes to pull things apart and examine them for the truth. He's also very funny. Angry and righteous, but funny.

All of these things combine to keep you in suspense, wondering what is really going on. The movie-makers don't take you outside to show you. So all you know is what the characters inside the studio know. Is what people say is happening, really happening? Are that many people affected? Is the cantankerous DJ hallucinating it all, or are his new friends just messing with him?

It's very creative, and original - and the way that the aberration is explained, is slow enough to follow without being condescending or boring. There's a mystery here, something new and strange is going on, and you get excited to learn all about it. Stephen McHattie does an excellent job selling the whole thing, contorting his face just right as his character tries to wrap his mind around what is happening.

And there are fun, humorous moments throughout, which makes it worth watching more than once to enjoy the details you missed the first time.

He's delightfully silly. And clever. There are surprises at every turn, even down to the very last page. But the best bit of all is how he makes a typing contest seem exciting - that is pure genius! There is comedy, sarcasm, likeable (and enjoyable, not-so-likeable) characters, along with unusual story-telling (the narrator flips forward and back a bit within the story... hilarious!) and quite creative plotting. Fun for all ages. I'll definitely be checking out his other series. :)

...but this one had me over the moon with glee. I am a long-time fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books, and I absolutely loved this film. The makers did an excellent job, taking great care in picking the cast, creating the sets, and keeping Pratchett's famous satirical humor throughout. I cannot find fault with a thing.

And for those of you who haven't read the books, it doesn't matter; the movie is enjoyable in and of itself. It's a great adventure/comedy. It pokes fun at modern things like cel phones, the internet, and corporations; it has a plot full of surprises, characters you'll cheer for, and a kooky romance. My bf's father loves it, and he's over 60, loves westerns and action films, and had never even heard of Terry Pratchett.

I'm recommending this one to everyone I know.
