The Lady in the Van (2016) - £3.49

Quirky but marvellous.

Only the English could make a movie like this & make it the joy that it is. Maggie Smith is absolutely wonderful - poor Alan Bennett - to have a character like that living in a caravan in his driveway for 15 years !!

Do watch it - top British movie - a quirky take well told.

Luther - Series 4 - £8.99

Idris Elba IS Luther !!

Such a dark character, but oh how well Elba inhabits Luther. I can't imagine anyone else being capable of doing justice to the role as Elba has right through the 4 series. A pity that Alice has gone - she & Luther had such a convoluted relationship. I do hope that another couple of series will be considered as this is first class drama.

Limitless (2011) - £5.99

Scary stuff !!

I purchased this DVD after watching the TV series of the same name. The plot is excellent & the acting first class- De Niro is his usual classy self. I find the concept of a drug like NZT not beyond comprehension. If you like tension with some humour, then this movie will be one you will want to watch.

Vera Series 1-4 - £19.99

Brenda is brilliant !!

I just love Brenda Blethyn as Vera Stanhope - she has inhabited the persona of Vera to perfection. Clomping around the stark countryside in her welllies, hat & floral frocks, she is certainly no fashionista & her sidekick Joe Ashworth - played extremely well by the gorgeous David Leon, is the perfect foil to her bluntness. The rest of the cast are also first class.

It is an extremely high quality TV series - add it to your viewing list if you have not already had the pleasure of watching a very talented actress & supporting cast at work in very good story lines.

Father Brown: Series 2 - BBC - £6.59

A charming series.

Mark Williams continues his role of Father Brown in style & Sorcha Cusack is still as good as ever as the annoying (but lovable) Mrs McCarthy. Good plots, with plenty of humour and wonderful acting make the second series well worth watching. Quality viewing.

Father Brown Series 1 - BBC - £6.59

Father Brown - watch it !

Mark Williams plays the G K Chesterton character of Father Brown superbly and Sorcha Cusack as Mrs McCarthy is SO annoying, but such a good actress. Only the English can make series like this - very engaging, well acted and written. May there be many more in the series !!

Agatha Christie's Poirot - Collection 9 (Series 13) - £13.29

The Final Curtain.

David Suchet, as always, plays Poirot to perfection. He really has inhabited Agatha Christie's character so well over many years, and sadly, this is the last series. As beautifully filmed and acted as ever, this sees Poirot complete his last case with the ever faithful Hastings. A fitting end to a marvellous period drama series.

Person of Interest - Season 2 - £13.59

Big brother IS watching !!

The second season is as good as the first ! I find this series compelling viewing - interesting characters, a plot that may not be all that 'out there' and excellent acting. Look forward to the release of the 3rd season, and hopefully more after that.

Vera - Series 3 - £8.39

Brenda is brilliant !!

Brenda Blethyn is superb as DCI Vera Stanhope - crusty, but with a soft heart, she clomps around the stunning scenery in her wellies, solving all sorts of crimes. Her side-kick, Joe, is very easy on the eye !!

A top class series - good story lines, great acting & believable characters. Well worth buying from Series 1 on.....

The Indian Doctor - Series 1 - £19.99

Poignant social comment

Set in the 60's in a Welsh mining village, a well educated Indian doctor & his beautiful wife arrive and are greeted with some suspicion, due to his race in part. The locals come around slowly, with the exception of the mine manager, who has his own agenda.

It is a wonderful BBC mini-series, well worth watching. The acting is first class, as is the script/story line.

It IS social commentary - for younger viewers, it is a good look at how things were before we became multi cultural societies.

Burn Notice - Season 1 - £14.29

I got hooked!!

When it was first on TV, wasn't keen on this series, but it grows on one, and I am now a big fan. I get the feeling that it's a bit tongue in cheek,

Lots of action, engaging characters & Miama as a back drop - if you haven't watched - do give it a try - I'm sure you will end up being as big a fan of this series as I am.

Thorne - Sleepyhead & Scaredy Cat - £8.69

Great viewing

Being a Mark Billingham fan, I was thrilled to find this 2 DVD set - I was really pleased to see Thorne brought to life in such a convincing way. A well cast, well acted duo of stories - kept me totally enthralled.

Well worth a watch!!

Law & Order: UK - Series 2 - £10.29

A bit dull

Whilst I realise the UK & USA legal systems are VERY different, the UK series has nowhere near the oomph!! of the US version. One episode in this series is a direct copy of a US episode, same name, same crime - a bit disappointing when the Brits do SUCH good crime series writing. I came to this series with an open mind - glad I watched it, but did not have me absorbed in it. Some good actors - doing their best with not very punchy scripts.
